Our Approaches and Therapies

At Above & Beyond Counselling, our therapists work integratively, meaning we draw from a range of therapeutic approaches and facilitating them to your needs. We understand that therapy can feel overwhelming at first, especially when it comes to identifying the different styles and techniques. That’s why we’ve simplified the definitions and made it easy for you to explore what each therapy involves and how it may support your journey.

Person-Centred Therapy (PCT)

Focuses on building a safe, non-judgmental space where you feel heard and accepted. You lead the sessions, and the therapist supports your personal growth and self-understanding.

Psychoanalytic Therapy (PAT)

Explores deep-rooted thoughts, memories, and experiences—often from childhood—to better understand your current emotions and behaviours.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

Helps you identify unhelpful thoughts and behaviours and teaches practical ways to change them. Often used for anxiety, depression, and stress.

Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT)

Builds emotional regulation, distress tolerance, and mindfulness skills. Especially helpful if you experience intense emotions or struggle with self-harm or relationship challenges.

Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT)

Helps you understand and process difficult emotions so you can respond to them in healthier ways. Often used in both individual and couples therapy.

Play Therapy

A child-friendly approach using toys, art, and games to help younger clients express feelings and work through emotional or behavioural challenges.

Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy (REBT)

Teaches you how thoughts affect emotions and how to challenge beliefs that may be irrational or unhelpful. A practical, goal-focused approach.

Systemic & Family Therapy

Looks at relationships and communication within families or groups. Helps everyone understand each other’s roles and work through shared challenges.

Somatic Therapy

Connects the mind and body. Focuses on how stress, trauma, or emotions can be held physically and teaches techniques to release tension through awareness or movement.

Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR)

Uses mindfulness practices like meditation and breathing to reduce stress, improve focus, and help you manage difficult emotions more calmly.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

Encourages acceptance of thoughts and feelings rather than fighting them, while helping you commit to actions that align with your values and goals.

Narrative Therapy

Helps you explore the stories you tell about your life and shift negative narratives into more empowering ones that support your growth and identity.
